Remembering the late rap artist

Earl Simmons known for his rap persona DMX passed away on April 9, one week after the rapper suffered from three heart attacks. The 50-year-old artist experienced several heart attacks triggered by a reported drug overdose and was admitted to White Plains hospital in New York on Saturday, April 2.

DMX collapsed at home and was rushed to the hospital for treatment in the ICU in critical condition being placed on life support. Paramedics attempted to resuscitate Simmons for 30 minutes and during this time he was deprived of oxygen that severely impacted Simmons’ brain function.

Shortly after being admitted to the hospital, Simmons’ family rushed to be by his side. Sources close to Simmons reported Simmons is in a “vegetative state” and claims of “some brain activity” initially being admitted into the ICU.

On April 6, Simmons underwent a series of tests revealing the level of brain activity and function that didn’t improve following the heart attack. The lack of improvement for Simmons’ brain function guided his family’s expectations and he died after experiencing a “catastrophic cardiac arrest” according to White Plains hospital.

In memory of the late rapper, Simmons’ family is planning on a private and public memorial service for everyone to remember the life of the entertainer. The family is still organizing a memorial with a suggestion from Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano. Mayor Spano recommends the public memorial to be hosted at Yonkers Raceway being the largest outdoor venture seating over 7,000 people.

Other famous New York venues have show tribute to DMX including the Apollo Theater and Madison Square Garden. As the plans for the memorial develop, fans around the world mourn the loss of the late artist.
