Two very different technology updates are showing where the industry is heading next. Samsung is preparing to expand its Galaxy S26 family with a new Fan Edition smartphone, while IBM and the United States Tennis Association are bringing more advanced AI features to the 2026 US Open.
One is focused on the device in your hand. The other is changing what you can do with it while watching a tennis match.
Galaxy S26 FE Takes Shape
The Galaxy S26 FE is expected to continue Samsung’s approach of offering some flagship-style features at a more accessible level.
The upcoming phone has been linked with a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, giving users a large screen and smooth scrolling for everyday use.
The device is also expected to use Samsung’s Exynos 2500 processor. If the final model follows these plans, it would provide another option for buyers who want a modern Galaxy experience without necessarily moving to the highest-priced S26 models.
Samsung has increasingly used its Fan Edition range to bridge the gap between premium and mid-range smartphones.
Long-Term Software Support Matters
One of the more important parts of Samsung’s current smartphone strategy isn’t a flashy camera feature or new display. It’s software support.
Samsung has committed its Galaxy S26 series to seven generations of operating system upgrades and seven years of security updates from launch.
Longer support can make a significant difference for people who don’t replace their phones every couple of years.
It allows devices to receive new Android features for longer while continuing to receive important security improvements. If the Galaxy S26 FE receives the same long-term treatment, that could become one of its strongest selling points.
AI Is Changing the US Open Too
Away from smartphones, technology is also changing how people experience major sporting events.
IBM and the United States Tennis Association have expanded their AI-powered digital features for the 2026 US Open.
More than 14 million people are expected to interact with the tournament’s digital platforms, making real-time information increasingly important for fans following matches remotely.
Instead of simply showing scores, the technology is designed to help explain what is actually happening during a match.
Following Momentum in Real Time
One of the most interesting features is Live Likelihood to Win.
The system analyzes historical information alongside live match statistics to estimate each player’s chances of winning. Those probabilities update after every point, allowing fans to see when the direction of a match begins to change.
A related feature called Key Moments goes further by identifying important turning points and momentum shifts.
This makes sports analytics easier to understand for casual viewers. You don’t necessarily need to study a long list of statistics to recognize that a player is beginning to take control.
AI Can Explain the Match
The US Open experience also includes an enhanced Match Chat feature powered by IBM watsonx Orchestrate.
Fans can ask questions about matches using normal conversational language and receive answers based on live match information, analysis, and historical data. Some responses can also include relevant photographs and video.
Another new feature, Serve Quality, analyzes a player’s serving mechanics using advanced tracking technology. It monitors 21 points across the body and racquet 50 times every second, helping create a near real-time assessment of serve quality.
For fans, that means more context without having to understand every technical detail behind the data.
Technology Is Becoming More Useful in the Background
The Galaxy S26 FE and the US Open’s AI upgrades may seem unrelated, but they reflect a similar trend.
Technology companies are increasingly focusing on features that become useful over time rather than simply looking impressive at launch.
For Samsung, that means potentially combining capable hardware with years of software support. For the US Open, it means turning enormous amounts of live tennis data into information that ordinary fans can actually understand.
The result is technology that works more quietly in the background.
Whether you’re using a phone for several years or checking why the momentum suddenly changed in a tennis match, the most useful innovation may increasingly be the technology that makes everyday experiences simpler.
