Trump Will Not Drop Attempting To Buy Greenland From Denmark

The notion of President Trump buying Greenland was the butt of many jokes over the weekend, but Trump says he’s serious. Trump says Greenland is “strategically nice” for the United States, and he would be willing to purchase the world’s largest island from Denmark.

“It’s just something we’ve talked about,” he said. “Denmark essentially owns it. We’re very good allies with Denmark. We’ve protected Denmark like we protect large portions of the world, so the concept came up…Strategically, it’s interesting. And, we’d be interested. We’ll talk to them a little bit,” the president said. He added, “It’s not No. 1 on the burner, I can tell you that.”

Larry Kudlow, an economic adviser to Trump, also confirmed to Fox News that Trump is serious.

“I don’t want to predict an outcome, I’m just saying the president, who knows a thing or two about buying real estate, wants to take a look at a Greenland purchase,” Kudlow says.

Greenland, which is home to only about 50,000 people and is mostly covered in glacial ice, is rich in natural resources. However, government officials in both Greenland and Denmark as the island is not for sale.

Former Danish Prime Minister Lars Rasmussen tweeted that he hoped the news was “an April Fool’s Day joke,” noting that the joke was out-of-season.
