Wrestling New With WWE Saudi Arabia
Much has been made of the WWE’s recent business deal with Saudi Arabia which is thought to be in the region of $1 billion. The company housed a show there in April which was greeted by many as a possible good move for the country.
However, with tensions currently at fever pitch between the US and Saudi Arabia following the alleged kidnapping and murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, the WWE have been questioned for their allegiance to the country and their royal family. WWE’s links with the country have been widely condemned with John Oliver slamming the relationship on ‘Last Week Tonight.’
The multi-billion dollar company have reacted since with upcoming event ‘Crown Jewel’ being taken off their upcoming events and every mention of Saudi Arabia and their past show ‘Greatest Royal Rumble’ also removed off the company website.
There has been no official mention yet on whether the show will go ahead as planned but the companies say they are still following the situation very closely. Government officials have stated that WWE should not go through with their planned event but as of writing, it is widely reported that the event will go on as planned.
However, further reports have suggested that the WWE can not go ahead with the event as it would inevitably see their stock price drop and that they are looking into possible back-up plans. One of which would be to move the show to a new location, with Europe being the most likely. The second option is to move a lot of the matches onto the next PPV card. The latter might be the most likely option with fans already invested in seeing the return to in-ring competition of Shawn Michaels and Brock Lesnar.
With WWE’s two weekly television shows being live this week, we should find out more about what is happening as if the show is going ahead more build up will be made but there will be a solution made in quick time.
