Apple has only recently introduced its latest iPhone generation, but attention is already shifting toward what could be a much bigger change in 2027.

New leaks suggest Apple is developing a major redesign to celebrate the iPhone’s 20th anniversary. The rumored device could introduce a dramatically different glass-heavy appearance, larger displays, and changes to the front-facing camera system.

There is also growing speculation that Apple could skip the iPhone 19 name entirely and move directly to iPhone 20.

Why Apple Could Jump to iPhone 20

The original iPhone launched in 2007, making 2027 its 20th anniversary.

Apple has previously used an anniversary to break from its usual naming pattern. In 2017, the company introduced the iPhone X alongside the iPhone 8, skipping an iPhone 9 generation.

That history has fueled expectations that Apple could make another naming jump for its next milestone.

For now, however, iPhone 20 remains an unofficial name. Apple hasn’t confirmed what the 2027 lineup will be called.

A Quad-Curved Design Is Being Tested

The biggest rumored change concerns the display.

Recent reports suggest Apple is testing what has been described as a “borderless quad-curved” design. Rather than having clearly visible edges surrounding the screen, the display glass could curve away along all four sides.

The aim appears to be creating the impression of an almost uninterrupted piece of glass.

Previous reporting has suggested Apple wants the front and back glass to curve toward the sides, with a metal structure remaining between them. That could make the device appear significantly different without requiring Apple to construct the entire phone from glass.

The Front Camera Could Change Again

Apple is also reportedly experimenting with how much hardware remains visible on the front of the phone.

Longer-term reports have pointed toward under-display Face ID and eventually an under-display front camera, which could create a completely uninterrupted screen.

The latest leaks, however, suggest Apple may take a more cautious approach for 2027.

Testing reportedly includes a smaller hole-punch-style camera arrangement and reduced Dynamic Island rather than completely hiding everything beneath the display.

Bigger Screens May Be Coming

The anniversary models could also become slightly larger.

One recent leak points to a 6.41-inch display for the iPhone 20 Pro and a 6.96-inch screen for the Pro Max.

Those increases aren’t enormous, but combined with dramatically smaller borders, they could make the displays feel noticeably more expansive.

The overall effect appears to be less about simply making another larger phone and more about allowing the screen to visually dominate the device.

Apple Still Has Time to Change Its Plans

It’s important to treat all of these details as early information rather than finished specifications.

The expected launch is still roughly a year away, and Apple is reportedly testing several approaches. Manufacturing challenges could determine which technologies actually make it into the finished product.

Under-display cameras are particularly difficult because hiding a camera behind screen pixels can affect image quality.

A Milestone iPhone Takes Shape

Apple transformed the iPhone’s appearance for its 10th anniversary with the iPhone X, removing the Home button and introducing Face ID.

The 20th anniversary could provide another opportunity for a major visual change.

Whether Apple ultimately calls it the iPhone 20 is still uncertain. But the growing number of reports around curved glass, reduced borders, larger displays, and hidden sensors suggests the company is aiming for something more ambitious than its usual yearly update.

If those ideas survive the development process, 2027 could bring one of the most recognizable changes to the iPhone since the iPhone X.
