South Florida Communities Call For Gun Reform
After two mass shootings on the same day–one in El Paso, Texas, and one in Dayton, Ohio–devastated Americans two weeks ago, proponents of gun control have ramped up their efforts at passing reforms. This weekend, a gun control group rallied in Miami-Dade, Florida, carrying signs bearing messages like, “Bulletproof backpacks are not the solution.”
The rally was led by the group Moms Demand Action, a gun-control group. Miami-Dade is a short distance from the scene of another horrific mass shooting, which took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
“If you’re angry, frustrated, heartbroken, then let me hear you say enough,” one attendee, a student, said.
“We can’t sit down. we got to stand up. We got to fight. We got to fight this gun violence,” said another attendee named Romania Dukes.
After the shootings in Dayton and El Paso, President Trump said he would support stronger background check laws and said America needs to do a better job addressing mental illness. In the wake of the shootings, polls showed the majority of Americans support some new reforms around gun control. More than 90 percent support universal background checks, and about two-thirds support banning so-called “assault weapons,” such as the AR-15.
