The floating student housing solution made of storage containers
One of the biggest issues among college students is housing with most options too expensive and lack in availability. The solution to this issue was solved through new concept design, Urban Rigger, for a floating neighborhood that is a new affordable housing option for students.
The first floating neighborhood was created in Copenhagen, Denmark utilizing storage containers as living spaces on a floating barge-like structure. The concept was to create a space in which students can live together on the water that can host 12 people on one Rigger.
The CEO of Urban Rigger, Rasmus Rømeling, says the general idea was to utilize the water areas located around urban areas in cities with a lot of students with colleges and universities having a huge problem of providing housing for all students. They wanted to use water areas in canals and industrial harbors that are abandoned and are no longer used for industrial production.
The Urban Rigger project has taken a vital next step. 72 new floating homes has been ordered and will arrive in Copenhagen during 2018/19. In Gothenburg 288 apartments will be in place by the end of 2019. Read more about the energy efficient homes here: https://t.co/y0ngTjBZzE pic.twitter.com/7lsQvHG1aK

One Urban Rigger is fully operational in Refshaleøen, Copenhagen harbor and students have already moved into the new space that is very satisfied with the new living space. The Urban Rigger features communal open spaces but still gives the students their own apartment space including a bathroom, kitchen, living room, and bedroom.
The Riggers that are apart of the same cluster have a community, creating a unique place that features the standard amenities you’d find in a normal residence. They also created a model where people can buy a share of the Urban Rigger that is divided by 12 shares per Rigger starting at the price of around $149,000 (955,000 Denmark krone) and can go up to $196,000 (1.25 million Denmark krone) depending on the layout of apartment you prefer.
Though it was initially created for the purpose of student housing but hundreds of people want to utilize the Urban Rigger concept for other purposes. For now, the company is focusing on developing and producing student homes for Urban Riggers.
