Decreasing Fake News By 80 Percent
Facebook is making large efforts to fight fake news on their site. The company has significantly improved it’s “fact-checking” capabilities. In the past, Facebook has made it quite obvious that they were not interested in being a full time fact checker for they did not feel it was their job. Furthermore, they have debuted their third-party fact-checker initiative, and it has had noteworthy growth in 14 different countries. The social media page will use the program to cut down fake news by over 80 percent!
While Facebook may not take the post down, they will clearly mark the post with a red warning label. This will educate viewers what information or news is real and what is not. Fake news posts will also be significantly smaller than real news. The real news article will appear around ten times larger compared to the fake article.
Their hope is that the fake news will help eliminate false perceptions in upcoming elections both in the U.S. and worldwide. This will discourage people from spreading news that could wrongfully educate viewers. Will the new technology work? Only time will tell.
