A towering 24-meter replica of the Statue of Liberty was brought down by powerful winds in southern Brazil this week, as severe weather swept across parts of Rio Grande do Sul. The dramatic incident unfolded in the city of Guaíba, near Porto Alegre, during a period of intense wind gusts that triggered emergency weather alerts across the region.
The statue, a familiar landmark located in the parking area of a Havan megastore, was seen swaying heavily before collapsing. Videos shared widely on social media captured the tense moments as nearby drivers quickly moved their vehicles to safety. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as the parking lot was largely empty at the time.
Earlier on Sunday, local civil defense authorities had issued a red-level alert, urging residents to stay indoors, secure doors and windows, and disconnect electrical appliances due to the threat of strong winds and airborne debris. Wind speeds in the area were reported to have surpassed 90 kilometers per hour.

In an official statement, Havan confirmed that the statue was installed when the store opened in 2020 and had all the required technical responsibility certifications in place. The company reaffirmed that the well-being of its customers, employees, and the surrounding community remains its highest priority.
Havan also announced that a detailed technical inspection will be conducted to determine the precise cause of the collapse and to guide any next steps. Local civil defense authorities echoed this commitment, noting that their own investigation will review both structural aspects and weather conditions to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
Cleanup operations began soon after the collapse, with the area around the fallen structure promptly secured as a precaution. While the sight of the fallen statue was striking, officials and company representatives emphasized that preparedness and quick response helped ensure the incident ended without harm.
As weather patterns continue to grow more unpredictable, authorities are reminding residents and businesses alike to stay alert, follow official guidance, and prioritize safety during severe conditions.
