Weekend Sports Review
The NFL’s high-scoring ways continued to ride that wave on Sunday.
The New Orleans Saints won their eighth straight game, destroying the Cincinnati Bengals 51-14 on the road. The Saints have scored at least 40 points in five games this season. Quarterback Drew Brees threw three touchdown passes, giving him 509 for his career, second-best all-time behind Brett Favre.
The Los Angeles Rams out-dueled the Seattle Seahawks 36-31, the Dallas Cowboys topped the Philadelphia Eagles 27-20 and the Washington Redskins, despite giving up 501 yards, stopped the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 16-3 to retain their grip on first place in the NFC East.
Also of note: With the recently-signed Matt Barkley at quarterback, the Buffalo Bills humiliated the New York Jets 41-10 on the road. The Jets, who are going into their bye week, may see this as a time to replace coach Todd Bowles. And the Cleveland Browns upended the Atlanta Falcons 28-16. Thank those rookies – Nick Chubb had the longest touchdown run in club history (92 yards) and Baker Mayfield threw three touchdown passes.
NASCAR:
Kyle Busch’s victory in Phoenix set the final four for the Monster Energy Cup Series Championship Four field at Homestead-Miami. Vying for the title with Busch: defending champion Martin Truex Jr., Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano. The lone member of that quartet who has not won the championship previously is Logano.
ELSEWHERE:
No big changes in the Associated Press college football poll. Alabama remains on top and garnered all 61 first-place votes. In the NBA, the Philadelphia 76ers acquired guard Jimmy Butler in a trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The final four in college field hockey is set with North Carolina playing Wake Forest and Maryland meeting Princeton. Matt Kuchar picked up his first PGA Tour win in four years with a one-stroke victory in the Mayokoba Golf Classic at Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.
