The Latest In Airport Technology
New facial recognition technology was on display at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday. A typical walk through the boarding area to get through security means showing your identification and having it scanned, as well as showing your boarding pass to a security person. Now at LAX, there is new airport technology that is similar to what is on the new iPhone. It is facial recognition technology. You put your passport on the scanner and it compares the picture of your face on your passport to your actual face. So, all you need to get through the security line is your face!
The result of the trial period for British Airways was so successful that it has expanded to Lufthanza, Qantas Airlines and Korean Airlines. It is supposed to make the lines go faster because there is less paperwork and wait time. When the system is fully implemented, it boards five people at a time. Additionally, they are going to be spending $5 billion on adding on to an area outside of LAX for parking, rental cars, in addition to a metro station. This “people mover” is set to be open in 2023. The people movers are free and come every two minutes. This will allow them to accommodate 10,000 people per hour! While the facial recognition technology is optional for now because of some people’s concern about privacy issues, time will determine whether it will be made mandatory in the future.
