You wouldn’t think physical well-being would be that much of a concern in the afterlife. After all, what’s gonna happen if you get hurt? It’s not like you can die twice. Unfortunately for Death, getting hurt in Have a Nice Death means getting sent back to the infinite stacks of paperwork in his office, and he would very much rather not have that happen. Here’s how to restore your health and use Anima in Have a Nice Death.

Have a Nice Death: Healing and Anima Explained

In Have a Nice Death, Death’s health bar at the top of the screen is made up of two layers: regular health and injuries. The regular health bar is bright white, draining out when you take damage. After you take some damage, though, a chunk of the bar turns gray. These are Death’s injuries, a kind of secondary health that needs to be refilled before you can restore your actual health. It’s kind of like the red section of a health bar in a fighting game.

The primary way to restore both Death’s health and injuries is through Anima, bursts of life energy that can be found lying around the various floors of Death Inc. You have three Anima slots above your health bar, and you can use them with a tap of the LB button (on an Xbox controller). However, it’s not as simple as just refilling your health at your leisure. Common Blue Anima can’t restore Death’s actual health, but merely recoup his injuries. Using a Blue Anima when your bar doesn’t have any gray parts will just waste it. Instead, you need to use a Gold Anima, which provides a “pure heal.” Pure heals will restore both your health and injuries, though Gold Anima is much harder to come by. You can either pick it up off the ground after combat encounters like Blue Anima, or, if you pick up another Blue Anima when your slots are already full of Blues, two of them will fuse to make a free Gold one. Blue Anima are prioritized when tapping the button, though you can skip right to using Gold ones by holding the button down for a couple of seconds.

Other Ways to Restore Health

Anima can be obtained as random rewards from completing combat encounters, or found at the end of Anima Storage floors, but generally speaking, they’re a precious resource, not to be used lightly. Luckily, there are a few other ways you can restore Death’s health in your travels:

  • Koffee: Occasionally dropped by random enemies or after cleared combat encounters, a steamy cup of Koffee will provide you with a small pure heal.
  • Lifesteal Abilities: Through either special weapons or curses, you can obtain a Lifesteal effect on your attacks. When you attack an enemy afflicted with Lifesteal, you’ll drain some of their health to restore your own. Keep in mind, though, that this can only heal injuries, not full health.
  • Break Rooms: Every time you defeat a Sorrow at the end of a department, you’ll stop off at the Break Room. In the Break Room, you can open the fridge and steal someone’s lunch, though the precise meal you get and its effects will vary. Keep in mind that you can only raid the fridge once per Break Room visit, though the Break Room is also home to an Anima dispenser that you can spend some Souluary on to restock your Anima.
  • Relaxation Rooms: After you’ve attempted enough rooms to level up a few times, Relaxation Rooms will begin appearing at random when boarding elevators. These rooms are home to Koffee Machines that, when used, will provide you with a hefty pure heal. They can only be used once, though.

The best way to keep Death alive (relatively speaking) is to just not get hit as much as you can manage. If that strategy falls through, though, you’ll want to make strategic use of the healing options available to you. There are only so many breaks in the work day, after all.
