Brazilian footballer Vinicius Jr, who plays for Real Madrid, broke down in tears during a news conference on Monday, March 25, as he addressed the ongoing issue of racist abuse he has faced. The emotional player expressed his difficulty in moving forward from the repeated instances of racism directed towards him.

Vinicius Jr shared his feelings: “I just want to play football, but it’s hard to continue; I feel less and less motivated to play.” His remarks shed light on the profound impact that racist abuse has had on him, both personally and professionally.

During the last La Liga season, the league reported ten incidents of racist abuse against Vinicius Jr to prosecutors, highlighting the persistent nature of the problem.

Despite the challenges he faces, Vinicius Jr asserted his determination not to let racism force him to leave Real Madrid or Spain. He emphasized his commitment to confronting racism head-on, stating, “It never crossed my mind to leave Spain because that’s exactly what the racists want. I will stay and continue to fight so they can see my face and know they will not silence me.”

Vinicius Jr’s resilience in the face of adversity was further demonstrated as Brazil prepared to take on Spain in a friendly match for the “One Skin” anti-racism campaign at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid on Tuesday, March 26.
