The Philippines has strongly denounced what it described as “unprovoked acts of coercion and dangerous maneuvers” by China in the South China Sea, accusing Chinese vessels of engaging in hostile actions that led to a collision and injuries among Filipino crew members.

According to a statement released by a Philippine task force on the South China Sea, Chinese maritime militia and coast guard ships harassed and blocked Philippine vessels conducting a resupply mission near the Second Thomas Shoal. The situation escalated when Chinese ships fired water cannons at the Filipino vessels, resulting in minor injuries to at least four crew members and damage to a Philippine coast guard vessel.

While China claims that Philippine ships illegally intruded into waters near the Second Thomas Shoal, the Philippines has countered that China’s actions raise doubts about its commitment to peaceful dialogue and the reduction of tensions in the region. The collision between a Chinese and a Philippine ship further exacerbated the situation, with the Philippine vessel sustaining minor structural damage.

In response, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson defended China’s actions as “professional and restrained” and urged the Philippines to cease maritime violations and provocations. However, the Philippine task force reiterated its demand for China to respect international law and uphold the rights of other nations in the South China Sea.

This incident underscores the ongoing territorial dispute between the Philippines and China, despite a 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration rejecting China’s expansive claims in the South China Sea. The Philippines recently took steps to enact a Maritime Zones law to delineate its maritime entitlements under international law, drawing criticism from China.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reaffirmed his country’s commitment to dialogue with China but emphasized the importance of defending sovereignty and maritime rights. This stance represents a departure from the pro-China policy of his predecessor, Rodrigo Duterte, as Marcos accuses Beijing of aggression in Philippine waters.

As tensions persist between the two countries, the Philippines urges China to uphold international norms and refrain from actions that escalate maritime disputes in the South China Sea.
