High School Student Wants To Take NBCUniversal To Court
A 17-year-old student from Covington Catholic High School in Kentucky, Nick Sandmann, is suing NBCUniversal for $275 million. Sandmann’s lawyers say the network unfairly smeared the student as a racist after a clash with counter-protesters at the March for Life in Washington, DC in January.
“Sandmann was at the center of a viral controversy back in January, alongside reports suggesting that he and his classmates had initiated a confrontation with Native American elder Nathan Phillips outside the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Subsequent reporting and video evidence contradicted that version of events,” Fox News reported.
Sandmann’s attorney, Todd V. McMurtry, announced the lawsuit on his Twitter page.
“Today, @LLinWood and I filed a $275,000,000 lawsuit against NBCUniversal on behalf of Nicholas Sandmann. The facts of the suit show the anti-Trump narrative NBC pushed so hard,” McMurtry tweeted, while also linking to a PDF file containing the lawsuit.
“NBCUniversal created a false narrative by portraying the ‘confrontation’ as a ‘hate crime’ committed by Nicholas,” the lawsuit read. “Sandmann [was] an easy target for NBCUniversal to advance its anti-Trump agenda because he was a 16-year-old white, Catholic student who had attended the Right to Life March that day and was wearing a MAGA cap at the time of the incident which he had purchased earlier in the day as a souvenir.”
After the confrontation, Sandmann publicly apologized to the Native American elder, Nathan Phillips, and denied any racist conduct or harassment, saying his classmates were merely performing their school’s chants during a moment of excitement.
