Amazon’s New Alexa Device

I’ve never had a voice-activated outlet, but I have tinkered with remote controlled ones. It’s pretty dang convenient, let me tell you. If we can remove the remote and just use our voices, well, that’s one less thing I need triple-A batteries for. Bring it on!

Amazon announced today that they’ll soon be releasing the Amazon Smart Plug. The Smart Plug is plugged into a normal outlet, and then an appliance can be plugged into it. Any active Smart Plug can be synchronized with an Amazon Echo and, by extension, Alexa.

Obviously, you can’t control all of the appliance’s functions, but you can remotely turn it on or off just by shouting at Alexa. It also works even if you’re not at home. Left the oven on? Just let Alexa know.

The Smart Plug is set to launch in October, and will cost $25. Pre-orders are available now.
