NVIDIA and IREN Bet Big on the Future of AI Infrastructure

Artificial intelligence is growing faster than ever, and the technology behind it is becoming just as important as the software itself. On May 7, NVIDIA and IREN announced one of the biggest AI infrastructure partnerships the industry has seen so far. Together, they plan to build up to 5 gigawatts of next-generation AI data centers, marking a major shift in how the world prepares for the future of artificial intelligence.

This partnership is not just about building more servers or expanding cloud computing. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang described these new facilities as “AI factories,” a term that reflects how central AI is becoming to the global economy. Instead of treating artificial intelligence as just another software tool, NVIDIA sees it as essential infrastructure, much like electricity or the internet.

The goal of these AI factories is to support massive computing clusters powered by NVIDIA’s Blackwell architecture chips. These advanced chips are designed specifically for demanding AI workloads such as training large language models, running complex simulations, and powering next-generation AI applications. As companies across industries race to integrate AI into their operations, the demand for computing power has exploded, and traditional data centers are struggling to keep up.

At the center of this partnership is a huge 2-gigawatt campus planned for Sweetwater, Texas. This location is expected to become the flagship site for NVIDIA’s DSX architecture and could serve as a model for future AI infrastructure projects around the world. Texas was likely chosen because of its available land, growing energy infrastructure, and business-friendly environment, all of which are important for projects on this scale.

What makes this announcement especially interesting is the financial side of the deal. NVIDIA secured a five-year option to purchase up to $2.1 billion in IREN stock. This move shows that NVIDIA is thinking beyond chip manufacturing.
