In a highly anticipated reveal, James Gunn, director and co-chair of DC Studios, has unveiled the shiny new logo for the upcoming Superman reboot, formerly known as Superman: Legacy. The film is set to be the first entry in the new DC Universe, soaring into theaters on July 11, 2025.
The logo, shared by Gunn on social media, showcases a sleek and modern take on the iconic Superman symbol. Gunn took to Instagram to announce the release date, writing, “In exactly one year #Superman opens all over the world.” This marks Gunn’s return to the DC universe following his work on The Suicide Squad in 2021.
The reboot will delve into Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. The official synopsis highlights Superman as “the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
The release date of July 11th holds special significance for Gunn, serving as a tribute to his late father. “My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, ‘Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.’ I hadn’t realized,” Gunn shared on social media. “I lost my dad almost three years ago. He was my best friend. He didn’t understand me as a kid, but he supported my love of comics and my love of film, and I wouldn’t be making this movie now without him.”
Gunn reflected on his journey to directing this Superman film, stating, “It has been a long road to this point. I was offered Superman years ago — I initially said no because I didn’t have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved.” He continued, “Then a bit less than a year ago I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman’s heritage — how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes.”
The film stars David Corenswet as Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. Wendell Pierce will play Perry White, and Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell will portray Clark Kent’s adoptive parents. The superhero ensemble includes Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., and María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica.
Superman is set to soar into theaters on July 11, 2025.
