Mbappé’s Hat-Trick Leads Real Madrid as League Play Progresses

European football delivered another busy stretch of matches in late August, with some of the continent’s biggest clubs picking up important victories.

Kylian Mbappé produced the standout individual performance as Real Madrid defeated Real Sociedad 4-1, while Barcelona followed with a 2-0 victory over Athletic Club. In England, Chelsea and Fulham both progressed to the third round of the League Cup.

Mbappé Takes Control at the Bernabéu

Real Madrid’s first home league match of the season didn’t begin as comfortably as the final score suggests.

Mbappé opened the scoring against Real Sociedad in the 40th minute, but Luka Sučić equalized just four minutes later. That sent the teams into halftime level at 1-1.

The second half was a completely different story.

Mbappé restored Madrid’s lead in the 60th minute after combining with Jude Bellingham. Vinícius Júnior then made it 3-1 eight minutes later before Mbappé completed his hat-trick in the 80th minute with a clever finish from a Vinícius pass.

The 4-1 victory gave Real Madrid a second consecutive league win and another encouraging performance early in the season.

A Big Night for Mbappé

Hat-tricks always attract attention, but this one felt particularly important.

Real Sociedad had created problems during the first half, and Madrid needed someone to take control of the match. Mbappé did exactly that.

His three goals also showed different sides of his attacking game. He found space, combined effectively with his teammates and remained composed when the opportunities arrived.

For Real Madrid, having Mbappé, Vinícius and Bellingham influencing the same attacking moves is an encouraging sign as the season begins to develop.

Barcelona Keep Winning

Barcelona responded one day later with their own home victory.

Raphinha opened the scoring against Athletic Club in the 37th minute after receiving a pass from Pedri and getting beyond goalkeeper Unai Simón.

Athletic remained in the game for much of the evening, partly because Simón produced several important saves. Barcelona eventually found their second goal in the 82nd minute when Fermín López took advantage of a defensive mistake to secure a 2-0 victory.

The result left Barcelona with six points from their opening two league matches.

Raphinha and Fermín Make the Difference

Barcelona had opportunities to make the scoreline more comfortable, but the match required patience.

Raphinha’s opener gave them control, while Fermín’s late goal finally removed any remaining doubt about the result.

The match also featured the Barcelona debut of midfielder Rodri, who entered during the second half.

With Real Madrid and Barcelona both starting strongly, the early stages of the Spanish league are already giving supporters plenty to follow.

Chelsea Move Through in the League Cup

Attention also turned to England on August 27, where Premier League clubs entered the League Cup.

Chelsea defeated Luton Town 2-0 at home to secure their place in the third round.

Danny Welbeck marked his debut by scoring shortly after halftime, heading in a cross from Malo Gusto. Chelsea’s second came later in the match through an own goal by Luton’s Hakeem Odoffin.

The victory means Chelsea will face Leeds United in the next round.

Fulham Enjoy a Comfortable Victory

Fulham also progressed with an impressive 3-0 win over AFC Wimbledon.

Emile Smith Rowe and Rodrigo Muniz both scored headers in the first half, with Kenny Tete providing the crosses for each goal.

Gonzalo García then added a third during stoppage time to complete the victory.

It was also Fulham’s first win under new manager Álvaro Arbeloa, making the result particularly welcome after their recent league defeat. Fulham will meet West Ham in the third round.

The Season Is Starting to Take Shape

It’s still early, but the first weeks of a football season can quickly create momentum.

Real Madrid have Mbappé scoring freely, Barcelona are collecting victories, and clubs in England are beginning to balance league football with domestic cup competitions.

There will be much bigger tests ahead for all four teams.

For now, though, Mbappé’s hat-trick at the Bernabéu stands out as one of the clearest reminders that Europe’s biggest stars are already finding their rhythm.
