The Kansas City Royals forced a seventh game in the World Series, and that’s good for them on two counts.
Their 10-0 win over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night evened the Series and staved off elimination. The seventh game, on Wednesday night, also augurs well for the Royals. Home teams have won the last nine Game 7s in the World Series, and the Giants are 0-4 when the Series goes to its maximum length. The Giants lost the 2002 World Series in seven games to the California Angels.
While the Series has been competitive, the games haven’t. There has been one game decided by a single run and five where the margin of victory has been five runs or more. Game 7 on Wednesday night makes for high drama simply because it’s decisive, but in a close Series the games just have not been tightly contested or the stuff of legend.
In Game 6, the Royals scored seven runs in the second inning and that was the story. By the third inning, every Royals batter had a hit.
Jeremy Guthrie gets the start on Wednesday night for Kansas City and Tim Hudson goes for San Francisco in a rematch of Game 3, won by Kansas City 3-2, the lone tight contest. The 39-year-old Hudson will become the oldest Game 7 starter in Series history.
The Royals haven’t won the World Series since 1985, nor had they been in the playoffs since then. The Giants are seeking their third championship in the last five years.
Today’s question
