Best Actress Oscar winner Halle Berry welcomed a son with husband Olivier Martinez on Saturday, October 5, according to celebrity news outlet E! Online. While full details have not yet been released, sources confirm that Berry gave birth at the exclusive and private Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, which is a consistently popular choices for expectant celebrity mothers, and that mother and baby are both healthy and doing well. The baby boy is the first child together for the couple, though Berry has a five-year-old daughter, Nahla, from her previous relationship with Canadian model Gabriel Aubry.

Mama Drama

The 47-year-old star of hit films such as Monster’s Ball and B.A.P.S. was said to be thrilled with the surprise conception, and was seen strolling through West Hollywood as recently as one day before birth. While Martinez, also 47, is a native of France, both he and Berry have publicly stated that they plan to raise their son as an American. The statement comes as no surprise after the very ugly and very public custody battle between Berry and the father of her daughter, Gabriel Aubry. A November 2012 altercation between Aubry and Martinez made headlines across the country after the two were involved in a physical fight over custody issues that led to a restraining order against Aubry. Both men reported significant physical injuries, though no charges were brought against either. Sources say that the custody case was settled amicably out of court and that Berry and Aubry are co-parenting their daughter with ease.

American Film Legend

Despite the drama in her personal life, Berry is most famous for her landmark win at the 2002 Academy Awards when she was chosen as the first African-American winner of the Best Actress Award. Berry’s win for the film Monster’s Ball marked a turning point in American cinematic history and ensured her place in film legend. Intriguingly, Berry’s earlier career included a portrayal of Dorothy Dandridge, who was the first African-American nominee for Best Actress in 1959 for her role as Carmen in the film Carmen Jones. In a further twist of fate, Berry and Dandridge were born at the same hospital, though 46 years apart.

One Big Happy Family

As one of the most stylish celebrity mothers today, Berry is often seen with five-year-old daughter Nahla out and about in Los Angeles, whether at the playground, farmers’ market, or simply running errands. The addition of a son to the family comes just three months after Berry and Martinez’ quaint and intimate wedding ceremony in Vallery, France, though the couple have been together since 2010. Berry shows no signs of slowing down following the birth of her son: CBS Television recently announced that the actress had signed on to a 13-episode deal to play the main role in Extant, a serialized drama developed by Steven Spielberg’s production company, Amblin Entertainment. Berry will play an astronaut who struggles to adapt to life back on earth after a year in outer space. The series is expected to air summer 2014.
