Facebook About To Take The Next Step Advancing Technology
Two new job postings from the social media giant suggests Facebook wants to know what you’re thinking. Facebook knows a lot about you already, based on your profile, status updates and the apps you link to it. The job listings are for a Brain-Computer Interface Engineer and a Neuroimaging Engineer. Both are for a big two-year job project, involving the development of advanced BCI technologies and neuroimaging.
The goal of the group is to focus on “augmented and virtual reality, artificial intelligence, connectivity and other important breakthrough areas.” To translate these terms, they mean thought identification or mind reading. Both jobs are listed to be on Facebook’s Menlo Park Campus in the elusive Building 8. Building 8 is where Facebook creates its groundbreaking products, which are top secret. The desired candidate needs a minimum of a PhD in neuroscience.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is committing hundreds of millions of dollars to this idea. He has previously made comments about communicating through just your thoughts; when you think of something, your friends will be able to experience it too. He described how in a perfect world, you would be able to “capture a thought… in its ideal and perfect form in your head and share that with the world.”
If you thought Facebook already knew too much about your personal preferences, they are about to take it to the next level. Hiring people who are “slightly impatient” for these new jobs will possibly change the way we interact on social media.
