A Sports Filled Weekend It Was
Jordan Spieth saved the worst for last.
Spieth shot a bogey-free 70 on Sunday and eased his way to a victory by four strokes over Kelly Kraft at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
It was the highest score of his four rounds, but the 68 he shot on Friday in rough weather conditions likely won this tournament for him. He put together back-to-back 65s going into Sunday, which he started with a six-shot lead.
Spieth essentially described his final round as a yawner. No treacherous lies, no desperate blasts from bunkers, no high drama.
“Today I hit 17 greens, sort of a dream round when you’re leading by a bunch. But it was sort of boring golf,” Spieth said.
It was a significant win for the 23-year-old. He joined Tiger Woods as the only players since World War II with nine PGA Tour victories before they turned 24 (Woods won 15). It was also a victory in Spieth’s 100th start on the PGA Tour.
College Basketball: Northwestern University has never made it to the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, but the Wildcats now look like a team that won’t be denied. Northwestern upended No. 7 Wisconsin 66-59 on Sunday in Madison to improve to 19-6. It was a critical win because Northwestern was without leading scorer Scott Lindsey (illness) for a third straight game and had lost the previous two…In another upset, Virginia Tech knocked off No. 12 Virginia 80-78…On Monday night the top-ranked UConn women go for their 100th consecutive victory. Yes, 100 in a row. The Huskies (24-0) are home against No. 6 South Carolina (21-2). This will be televised by ESPN2 at 9 p.m. ET.
NBA: The Miami Heat’s 13-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday with a 117-109 loss in Philadelphia to the 76ers…Carmelo Anthony scored 25 points to lead the New York Knicks to a 94-90 home win over the San Antonio Spurs. Anthony moved into 25th place among all-time NBA scorers, passing Charles Barkley…The Detroit Pistons wiped out a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter and beat the Toronto Raptors 102-101.
