The long-running series may be switching to a live service format.
Video game publisher and developer Ubisoft announced today that their next installment in the long-running Assassin’s Creed franchise, which has seen a new game release nearly every year for over a decade, is currently in development. However, this new game, currently codenamed “Assassin’s Creed Infinity,” will supposedly be something of a departure from the series’ general identity.

“Rather than continuing to pass the baton from game to game,” read Ubisoft’s official statement, “we profoundly believe this is an opportunity for one of Ubisoft’s most beloved franchises to evolve in a more integrated and collaborative manner that’s less centered on studios and more focused on talent and leadership, no matter where they are within Ubisoft.”
While Ubisoft themselves kept things vague, according to a report from Bloomberg, this new game will an “evolving” environment encompassing multiple locations and time periods seen over the course of the series, in a similar vein to the massive ecosystems present in online games like Fortnite and Grand Theft Auto Online. Assassin’s Creed games have employed staple mechanics of live service games for several entries now, including paid cosmetic DLC and timed events, so in theory, this isn’t much of a leap.

Bloomberg’s report notes, however, that this change has caused a spot of friction within the development team, as many of its members are more accustomed to working on large, singular games rather than massive online environments.
