The film will be a magical musical in the hills of Colombia.

Today, Disney released the first trailer for their next animated motion picture, Encanto. The film takes place in a village in Colombia, and follows the lives of the residents of the enchanted Casa Madrigal. Every member of the Madrigal family is blessed with a “Gift,” a mysterious magical ability that makes them unique, including super strength, shapeshifting, animal communication, and more. The only member of the family with no Gift is our heroine, 15-year-old Mirabel, voiced by Stephanie Beatriz. Over the course of the film, Mirabel must find what makes her truly unique, all while protecting her family’s gifts from mysterious forces.

The entire musical score of the film is being composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who previously signed on for some late-stage work on Disney’s Moana. Miranda, alongside Jared Bush, Byron Howard, and Charise Castro Smith, are excited for this film and the positive message they hope it can convey.

“One of the things that we really kind of all talked about—all the creators, Charise and Byron and Jared and I—we were like, ‘We really want to tell a family, an intergenerational family story with all the complexity that brings,’” Miranda told io9 back in December. “So often when you get into story mode, it turns into the hero and the quest—and you lose characters, then you lose complexity because everything becomes the quest. And I think what’s been thrilling about this is, since that’s been our mission statement, it’s been really fun to sort of write, you know, musical family dynamics in a really fun and complicated way. I’m really excited for the world to finally see it.”

Encanto is set to hit theaters on November 24, 2021.
