A Night With The Stars
As per usual, the 75th Annual Golden Globes did not disappoint. From plenty of support for sexual assault victims to some amazing speeches and award wins, this year’s ceremony was anything but boring.
The night was heavily centered around the #MeToo campaign, supporting victims of sexual assault, as the movement led most of the conversations. Many celebrities wore black to stand in support of the campaign as well as in support of victims everywhere. Some celebrities, like Meryl Streep, even brought gender and racial justice activists as their dates, including Tarana Burke, the founder of the #MeToo movement.
The night wasn’t all serious, though, especially when Mariah Carey tweeted that she accidentally stole Meryl Streep’s seat after hurrying back from a quick trip to the bathroom. Could the story get any better? Yes it can, and it does. In a tweet, Carey explained the mishap and quoted Meryl as saying, “you can steal my seat anytime!” Awww…even celebrities get all geeky over other celebrities.
But, the seat stealer wasn’t what stole the show. Oprah Winfrey stole our hearts, as she always seems to, by being the first black woman ever to win the Cecil B DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award. Her power and presence was stunning as she gave her acceptance speech, in a fashion that only Oprah can.
“I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon! And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘Me too’ again,” Winfrey announced proudly as she received a well-deserved standing ovation.
