HBO shared a brief glimpse of the series in sizzle reel of upcoming shows.

Back in 2020, HBO announced that they were in planning stages for a live-action series based on the blockbuster 2013 video game The Last of Us. Since that initial announcement, the production has been very slowly releasing a drip feed of information about the show, from its cast to a handful of production screenshots. Over the weekend, in conjunction with the release of the hotly anticipated House of the Dragon, HBO released a sizzle reel of their upcoming shows, with a teaser for the Last of Us included.

The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as middle-aged Joel and young Ellie, respectively, in a world ravaged by a fungal zombie plague. Rather than the monsters themselves, the story focuses on what happens in a society that’s become hyper-controlled by localized police states in order to preserve some semblance of order in the face of encroaching horror. Joel is tasked by an associate to smuggle Ellie out of a quarantine zone and on a cross-country trip, as she may contain the secret to stopping the zombie plague.

While a precise release date for the show has not yet been set, it is confirmed to be releasing some time in 2023.
