Bye Bye Checkout Lines
Amazon continues to revolutionize the term “online retailer.” So to say it’s been a big year for Amazon thus far may be a tad of an understatement. The mega company has whittled its search for the city to host its second head quarters down to 20, CEO Jeff Bezos has been named one of the richest billionaires in the United States and they can now deliver a package inside your home when you’re not there.
We are beginning to wonder, what can’t, or better yet, what won’t Amazon do? The latest news from the retail Goliath is the opening of a cashier-less grocery store in Seattle, Washington. Amazon opened its futuristic store, Amazon Go, on Monday. Mind you, this is just one of several physical retail initiatives the primarily online retailer has undertaken recently. It’s quite obvious at this juncture that Amazon is no longer looking to stop at e-commerce only.
The way this new store works is quite interesting. The store uses cameras and sensors to track what you grab and place into your basket. There are no lines, and there is no checkout process to have to deal with. That makes life easier for the store owner as well as the consumers. You are charged via your amazon account, of course, without having to pull a single credit card out of your wallet. Pretty cool, right? What will Amazon do next?
