The city of Dubai is reeling from the aftermath of historic torrential rains that inundated the desert metropolis, leading to widespread chaos and disruption. The United Arab Emirates experienced record-breaking rainfall on Tuesday, with up to 259.5mm (10.2in) reported, marking the highest precipitation levels in the country’s 75-year recorded history.
As the sun rose on Wednesday, tales of ordeal and struggle emerged from residents and travelers alike. Many found themselves stranded in flooded streets and offices overnight, enduring harrowing experiences as they navigated the unexpected deluge.
At Dubai International Airport, one of the world’s busiest air travel hubs, operations were severely affected, with numerous flights delayed and passengers left stranded for hours. Emirates, the flagship airline of Dubai, advised passengers to avoid the airport unless absolutely necessary, as delays and disruptions persisted throughout the day.
Passengers described scenes of frustration and chaos at the airport, with long queues, lack of information, and limited access to amenities. Some flights were diverted to Dubai World Central Airport, where travelers faced similar challenges amid the ongoing disruptions.
In response to the crisis, Emirates announced the suspension of all check-ins and flight services until Thursday morning, acknowledging the significant impact on travel schedules. The airline urged affected passengers to stay updated on the situation through official channels and apologized for the inconvenience caused.

The unprecedented rains also led to flooding in various parts of the UAE, including Sharjah, where residents waded through submerged streets and improvised makeshift boats to navigate the waters. Tragically, one fatality was reported in Ras al-Khaimah, highlighting the severity of the situation.
The UAE government has extended remote working arrangements for federal employees due to the widespread impact of the weather conditions.
As the city works to recover from the aftermath of the torrential rains, authorities are focused on restoring normalcy and ensuring the safety and well-being of residents and visitors.
