Catching up from over the weekend
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck retired suddenly on Saturday night after news of his pending plans for such an announcement became public as he stood on the sidelines during his team’s third preseason game.
Luck, 29, has battled a mysterious left calf/ankle injury throughout the preseason and had missed all of 2017 after shoulder surgery.
As ESPN’s news story began to circulate, some classless Colts fans booed Luck. He left the field and his plan to discuss stepping away on Sunday turned into a sudden Saturday evening news conference. He said he was mentally worn from rehabbing numerous injuries that have occurred since he was the first pick of the draft in 2009.
The Colts will now turn to Jacoby Brissett, who filled in for Luck in ’17. Luck was the comeback player of the year in 2018.
His retirement at so young age has rekindled the debate about the ravages of football on the human body and provided a sad commentary on fan behavior. As this unfolded, former NFL fullback Le’Ron McClain was pleading on Twitter for medical assistance because his brain is “tired” and “I need medical help.”
Golf:
Rory McIlroy capped what may be his finest season on the PGA Tour with the FedEx Cup championship at East Lake in Atlanta, Georgia. McElroy shot a 4-under 66 to top Xander Schauffle by four strokes and collect the $15 million prize. It was the second time he has won this event, a feat matched only by Tiger Woods. Six spectators were injured on Saturday by a lightning strike while the tournament was suspended due to weather.

The Atlanta Braves took a 2-1 decision from the New York Mets for a three-game road sweep.
