Etienne will need to undergo medical tests to determine the severity of the injury.
During Monday night’s preseason bout between the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New Orleans Saints, the Jaguars’ running back, Travis Etienne, was spotted limping on the sidelines after his third snap of the game. After the final score, he was then spotted again with a distinctive boot over his foot. The implication was obvious: Etienne had been hurt.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, Etienne had suffered a Lisfranc injury, a particular kind of foot sprain located around the middle of the foot. It was originally assumed the injury was a lighter sprain, as the initial x-rays of the foot came back negative for something more severe. In order to determine the exact scope of the injury, Etienne will need to undergo a battery of medical tests today.

Depending on how bad the injury is, Etienne could be out of the game for a long while, well past Week 1. This could prove to be a problem, as Etienne’s high-speed playstyle is a major tentpole of the Jaguars’ offense. Team coach Urban Meyer is fairly certain it isn’t a severe sprain, but admitted he won’t know for sure until Etienne’s tests come back.
