Season 10 of Fox’s dance reality competition So You Think You Can Dance ended with a bang. The more than two hours funfare ended with the revelations of the big winners -one male and one female – this season.
The crowned champs were Amy Yakima, a 19-year-old jazz dancer who hailed from Northville, Michigan and DuShaunt “Fik-Shun” Stegall, the 18-year-old Las Vegas native whose passion revolves around hip-hop dancing.
And They Won!
Aside from bringing home the championship, Amy and Fik-Shun both were hailed America’s Favorite Dancers; the results were based on votes casted by home viewers for the top four finalists after the previous week’s performance show.
For that said prod, Amy and Fik-Shun with Jasmine and Aaron, the other two finalists who completed the SYTYCD Season 10’s top 4, performed five times for the panel of judges which included the show’s executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, dance champion and choreographer Mary Murphy with singer/dancer/choreographer Paula Abdul and Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas as guest critics.
The performances done by the top 4 finalists were a solo, a routine with each of the top 4 contenders – totaling to three – and a dance with a SYTYCD all-star to his or her choice of genre.
Amy and Fik-Shun each received more than $100,000 in cash prizes and get to grace the covers of Dance Spirit magazine.
Additionally, SYTYCD host Cat Deeley announced Amy garnered the highest number of home viewer votes.
Reactions
“I can’t believe it! I never thought I’d be here! I didn’t even think I’d make it to Vegas and I’m standing here!” Amy gushed after she was announced as the female winner beating fellow female finalist, 20-year-old contemporary dancer Jasmine Harper from Lawrenceville, Georgia.
On the other hand, male winner Fik-Shun was seen crying after the announcement. He bested fellow male finalist and tap dancer 25-year-old Aaron Turner. Both of them hailed from the Nevada County.
“This means everything to me. I’m so happy, everybody! I just want to thank everybody – my family, one of my closest friends that I performed with on The Strip is here tonight in the audience and he came here for this finale. And I’m so happy he got to see me perform for the first time live, and I think everyone else. I thank everyone else for being here and having my back the whole way through! This means so much to me and I can’t ask for anything more!” he exclaimed.
Before being chosen for the show’s top 20, all the contenders had to go through auditions in their respective locations and with so many aspirants auditioning, getting a spot was like shooting for the moon. When they did pass the audition, they had to get past the Vegas Week which all four claimed had pushed them to their maximum limits. However, they did concede all was worth it when their names were announced as part of SYTYCD’s top 20 and were given the chance to improve their talents in front of the world and be mentored by well-known dancers and choreographers. Nevertheless, being part of Season 10’s top 4 was the highest point they were all dreaming of.
Dancer aspirants can still try their luck next season as Nigel announced there is going to be a So You Think You Can dance season 11 set to open May 2014.
