US National Women’s Team To Celebrate In New York

Thousands of fans are expected to show up to support the U.S. women’s soccer team after they won the World Cup last weekend. The U.S. beat The Netherlands 2-0 after one of the team’s star players, Megan Rapinoe, kicked the winning goal. The team will now return home to a ticker-tape parade in New York City on Wednesday.

“This starts, like, an amazing three days of getting to just release all that emotional, physical exhaustion that we’ve had over the last 30 days and just be able to celebrate and make sure that everything is worth it,” Alex Morgan, a member of the U.S. women’s team, said. “Now we just get to enjoy each other’s company and just have fun.”

The Alliance for Downtown New York is organizing the parade. Jessica Lappin, president of the Alliance, said her organization is collecting several tons of shredded paper for the parade–which is where the phrase “ticker tape parade” comes from.

“We’re gonna have a lot of healthy participation and people are really excited for this moment,” Lappin said. “It’s just sort of mesmerizing to see and adds to the whole experience.”

The parade begins at 9:30 in the morning in Battery Park and ends at New York’s city hall.
