Former first lady addresses DNC

The Democratic Nation Convention kicked off Monday night with the first of many Democrat keynote speakers with former first lady Michelle Obama. The former first lady showed her support for Biden in the upcoming election saying President Donald Trump is “in over his head.”

Obama reflects upon meeting fellow Americans in turmoil during these unprecedented times through pain and struggle. She goes onto say that the American people can determine whether to honor this struggle by who is elected as president.

Obama testifies that she has seen first-hand the immense power of the presidency to improve the nation. She explains the job is hard ‘requiring a clear head for judgment; mastery of complex issues; devotion to facts and history; moral compass; ability to listen; and an abiding belief that the 330,000,000 lives in this country have meaning and worth.’

Obama goes onto explain that the power of the president can move markets as well as start wars and broker peace saying, “You simply cannot fake your way through this job.” She calls out for more people to vote and supports a bigger voter turn out than 2016 reminding voters that their vote matters.

Obama goes onto explain how Joe Biden helped to benefit the Obama administration during his time as Vice President. The Obama Administration was able to achieve a record-breaking stretch of job creation and secured the right to healthcare for 20 million people.

The Obama Administration was also respected around the world and rallied allies to combat climate change. She goes onto speak about the administration’s success with scientists to contain an ebola outbreak from becoming a global pandemic that compares to the current coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic.

She goes onto reflect the current state of the nation four years after Trump’s presidency with more than 450,000 lives lost to the COVID-19 pandemic and the economy is collapsing blaming Trump for “down-playing the virus for too long.” Too many people have lost their jobs and healthcare due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Obama explains that Trump has turned his back on ally countries that were secured by the Obama, Raegan, and Eisenhower administration. She goes onto express how the Trump administration lacked empathy is spreading this negative message to citizens surrounding racial equality.

Obama goes onto explain that the lack of empathy in the White House is translating to the public with people ignoring COVID-19 health recommendations in public and the unfair treatment of peaceful protestors. She explains that when people go low you have to take the higher road and express sympathy for others.

Michelle Obama is one of the opening guest speakers of the Democratic National Convention with former president Bill Clinton set to speak tonight. The former first lady and 2016 presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is set to speak Wednesday night along with former president Barack Obama.
