Social Media Was Not Too Happy With This Joke
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson praised a speech by Britain’s controversial Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, and joked about how the newly-elected PM is his cousin. However, the jokes fell flat with The Rock’s social media followers, who apparently aren’t fans of the other Johnson.
“He’s family. You don’t know that, but now all of Britain knows… he’s my cousin. It’s like looking in the mirror, every time I see Boris,” The Rock joked. “Jokes aside, PM did say something in his speech I liked – ‘the people are our bosses’ 100% agree. The people/audience/consumer will always matter most. #ourboss.”
Boris Johnson is an ally of Donald Trump and has pledged to remove Britain from the European Union by October 31st. After getting backlash from his followers, The Rock deleted his tweets and issued an apology.
“Well according to the people, maybe we’ve not related after all,” he tweeted. “Big mahalo to my people who I can always rely on to give me the real talk and swift perspective & education on the individual I did not know.”
But not all of The Rock’s fans were happy with the apology, saying The Rock should have stood by his original comments, and that he was cowing to pressure from social media.
“Oh Dwayne, I thought you were tough, but you gave in to a bunch of snowflakes,” a Twitter user with the handle @oaedoel wrote. “Your original thoughts were spot on, don’t let their hate make you change anything.”
