Actor Alec Baldwin is set to have his own late night show on MSNBC.
The 54-year-old actor has already finalized the deal with the said network and his show, with the working name Up Late with Alec Baldwin, is set to air weekly, every Friday at 10 PM, and is due to premiere in October. It will have Alec talk about current events and culture with his guests.
It’s Official
MSNBC president Phil Griffin made the official announcement last September 5.
“I’ve been talking with Alec for a while and can’t wait to bring his personality and eclectic interests to MSNBC. He’s got such passion for ideas and what’s going on in the world – he’s going to be a great addition to our lineup,” he stated in his statement.
Up Late with Alec Baldwin is said to take over the time slot of the network’s prison documentary series Lockup.
Nevertheless, the 54-year-old is not a greenhorn when it comes to hosting. Prior to him being offered this show, he has been busy with his podcast, Here’s The Thing, over New York’s WNYC radio which had him interviewing personalities from various fields like David Letterman, Dick Cavett, Ed Rollins who is a well-known Republican political strategist, PETA’s Dan Matthews and even Chris Rock. It is from the same podcast that his upcoming MSNBC show had been patterned.
He had been very vocal about his desire to host and had once said in an interview earlier this year that to be a 60 Minutes reporter is one of his lifelong dreams.
“That show would be the pinnacle of the marriage between my political beliefs, my political curiosity and wanting to communicate to people on camera to a broader audience,” he revealed in the said talk.
TV is also familiar territory for the actor. After all, he did get to host NBC’s Saturday Night Live sixteen times and he was also able to win two Emmy awards for the 30 Rock comedy series which was also aired on NBC. Before accepting MSNBC’s offer, Alec Baldwin reportedly was in preliminary negotiations with NBC executives for a late-night talk show but for some unknown reasons it did not push through.
His MSNBC late-night show will be pitted against another show in HBO with Bill Maher, another outspoken with left-leaning ideals personality, as a host. However, the show’s time slot is not one with too much pressure so it does allow Alec Baldwin’s new show to find its ground and hopefully rise up from there.
Show not the only ‘New’ in Actor’s Life
Up Late with Alec Baldwin had come at the most opportune time for the actor as he has a new mouth to literally feed – less-than-one-month-old daughter Carmen.
He and wife Blue Jasmine star Hilaria welcomed the little bundle of joy last August 23. He spoke of the new addition to his family as his second take at fatherhood.
“It’s a second chance for me in a way. Everybody knows I had a pretty unpleasant custody battle for Ireland,” Baldwin told the press in an interview referring to his now grown-up daughter, Ireland Baldwin.
