Same boatload of games for half the price.
With everyone and their grandma getting aboard the subscription service bandwagon, those who were already there have begun to take measures to secure their futures. Case in point, with Microsoft’s forays into porting their Games Pass service to PC, as well as the upcoming public demonstration of their mysterious Project xCloud, Sony is taking measures to keep themselves ingrained in the public’s mind before things get fierce. Their first order of business: slashing prices.
Sony announced today that the costs of their PlayStation Now subscription plans will all be halved from their current values. Here’s the current price scale:
- 1-month subscription: $9.99 (formerly $19.99)
- 3-month subscription: $24.99 (formerly $44.99)
- 1-year subscription: $59.99 (formerly $99.99)
PlayStation Now, if you didn’t know, allows PlayStation users to stream and download full games from a rotating catalog pulled from the PS3 and PS4 libraries. Speaking of which, in addition to the price cut, Sony announced four big box titles would be added to PS Now. These are God of War (2018), Grand Theft Auto 5, Infamous Second Son, and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Sony wanted to make it clear, however, that these major additions to PS Now would be on a strictly temporary basis, rotating out for other games in January (but with the implication that other big games would take their place).
This is definitely a good move on Sony’s part, as these prices are closer to what other game-streaming services cost. Still, it’s anyone’s guess where Project xCloud will land on the playing field, since it won’t only feature a comparatively large library of streamable games, but will also be able to stream to phones and tablets.
