Fingers crossed for ‘Bonanza Bros.’
With both of Nintendo’s Classic consoles discontinued and reception for Sony’s PlayStation lukewarm at best, there’s a bit of a niche in the retro gaming industry that could use a proper filling. If someone’s going to fill that hole, it might as well be a participant in the original console war: good ol’ Sega.
Sega announced on Monday that their own horse in the throwback console race, the Sega Genesis Mini, will be releasing worldwide on September 19th, 2019 for $79.99 USD (it’ll be the Sega Mega Drive Mini in Europe because localization is weird like that). The console will come bundled with two traditional wired Genesis controllers, as well as a USB-Micro-B power cable and an HDMI cable so you can enjoy your games in the high definition they deserve.
The Genesis Mini will have forty games internally loaded and available to play at your leisure. On the console’s official site, ten of those games have been revealed:
- Ecco the Dolphin
- Castlevania: Bloodlines
- Space Harrier II
- Shining Force
- Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
- ToeJam & Earl
- Comix Zone
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Altered Beast
- Gunstar Heroes
No word yet on whether or not the console feature similar quality of life features to the NES and SNES Classics (save states, fast forward, etc.). Whether it does or not, though, it’s probably a safe assumption that this little fun box will sell just as well as Nintendo’s consoles. After all, Sega does what NintenDon’t. Or, well, Sega does what NintenDid already.
