Janelle Monae’s Opening Performance
The opening number by Janelle Monae celebrated the art of story-telling and celebrating all the nominated movies. To start the night off Janelle Monae took to the stage performing the theme song “It’s A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood” from the celebrated family-friendly show “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” re-enacting the iconic opening scene when Mister Rogers changes his sweater while singing the timeless classic.
The show included dancers dressed as characters from several of the nominated films including “The Joker” and “Little Women,” Billy Porter joins her on stage for a power-duet. Monae even donned an all flower cape with a floral crown much like the main characters from the thriller “Midsommar.”
Steve Martin and Chris Rock Cracking Political Jokes
Steve Martin asks why the Oscars doesn’t have a host and Chris Rock simply replies, “Twitter,” referring to when Kevin Hart debacle that happened last year. They poke fun at the recent Iowa Caucus diaster saying that the Oscars avoids naming nominees by mistake because the academy will be using the “Iowa Caucus app.”
They also bring light to the fact that no female directors were nominated this year saying that something is missing from the nominations. They also mention the lack of black nominees stating that the first Oscars awards show had black nominees and this year they only have one.
Brad Pitt’s Acceptance Speech
Brad Pitt won his second Oscar award for Best Supporting Actor in “Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood” and got political in his speech. During his speech, he said, “They told me I only have 45 seconds up here which is 45 seconds more than the Senate gave John Bolton this week,” poking fun at the Senate hearing for the impeachment trials. He continues to say that he thinks Quentin (Director of “Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood”) should do a movie about it and in the end, the “adults do the right thing.”
Performing One Song In 11 Languages
Celebrating the animated movie that is a worldwide phenomenon, “Frozen 2,” voice of Else, Idina Menzel, was joined by fellow translating voice-actresses to perform the song “Into The Unknown” in 11 languages including Japanese, Polish, Thai, Castilian, German, Norweigan, Russian, Spanish, and Danish among the 44 languages “Frozen 2” was translated to.
Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wigg Audition Through Presenting
The comedic actresses came out to present the Best Production Design award but decided to take the moment to show off their acting talent. They acted like they were upset and pretended that they were going to walk off without presenting but were only joking, knowing there were a lot of directors in the room that they can take the chance to audition for at the moment.
It just goes to show that they can do more than just comedy roles. They went onto present the next award for Achievement in Costume design by singing a hilarious melody of songs relating to clothing, further proving they can be serious actors.
Great Thunberg and Climate Change Awareness PSA
The Oscars wanted to bring awareness to climate change and produced a short PSA including young climate change activist Greta Thunberg. In the clip to announce the award for Best Documentary Feature, Thunberg thanks documentarians for their work and that she learned the most about climate change through the power of film and documentaries.
James Corden and Rebel Wilson Poke Fun at “Cats”
If you don’t remember the ill-received film based on the long-running Broadway show “Cats,” James Corden and Rebel Wilson have you quickly remember. They presented the Best In Visual Effects wearing cat costumes matching their characters from the unpopular film and even swat at the moving microphone stand in true cat form before announcing the winner.
“The Irishman” Being The Biggest Loser
Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” was one of the biggest front-runners with 10 nominations and was one of the biggest winners at The Golden Globes, but they didn’t have as much luck at the Oscars. “The Irishman” walked away winning not a single award, making for one of the biggest Oscar snubs.
