Toho Planning New ‘Godzilla’ Film for Monster’s Anniversary

A new film is coming in 2023.

Since the 1950s, Toho’s Godzilla has been the first and foremost name in giant movie monsters around the world. While the original film was regarded as more of a novelty in the west, over the years, subsequent releases, not to mention new productions with the help of studios like Legendary Pictures, have helped to establish a global fanbase for the giant nuclear lizard.

This week marked the 68th anniversary of the original film’s release, and to celebrate, Toho gave us something to look forward to: next year, on November 3, 2023, a brand new Toho-made Godzilla movie will be hitting theaters. This will be the first new Japanese Godzilla film released since 2016’s Shin Godzilla.

“Godzilla’s long history has shaped the world of pop culture and monster fandom for nearly 70 years,” said Lora Cohn, managing director of Toho International.

Little has been divulged about the film as of writing, beyond its release date and the fact that Takashi Yamazaki has been attached to direct. In the meantime, though, Toho is offering the previously-unreleased animated series, Godzilla Island, on their official YouTube channel, with new episodes slated to release in mid-November. Also, Fathom events will be running theater screenings around the United States of the classic Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla this weekend.
