It’s another busy day on this strange little island called Earth. Here’s a highlight from the news feed to get your day started.
Rising in the online communities is WAGS of SCI: “Wives And Girlfriends of Spinal Cord Injury.” Formed in March 2017, WAGS of SCI is a community and support group for women whose partners have been paralyzed from a spinal cord injury and relegated to a wheelchair. Co-founders Brooke Pagé and Elena Pauly created the group after their husband and boyfriend, respectively, were paralyzed in accidents.
Pagé was extremely distraught after her husband’s paralysis, not just out of concern for him, but also because she had nobody else to talk to about her situation, her own age or otherwise. By chance, she met Pauly over Instagram, and the two found solace in giving each other advice on their partners’ conditions.
Since the group’s formation, they have gained thousands of followers on Instagram, mostly women between the ages of 25 and 35. These followers swap stories about their partners’ accidents and share tips on topics like medication, physical complications, and disability services.
“We don’t want anyone to ever feel alone again,” Pagé says. “We want to serve as a vessel for the same kind of women to find each other and create bonds like we did.” The group has held multiple in-person meetups around North America and abroad, and Pagé and Pauly regularly receive thankful correspondence from their followers.
