A Sports Filled Weekend It Was
Baseball inducted its 2017 class into the Hall of Fame on Sunday in Cooperstown, New York. Former stars Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines and Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez were enshrined, along with former club executive John Schuerholz, who built World Series winners in Kansas City and Atlanta, and former commissioner Bud Selig.
Making a strong bid for his own induction ceremony someday was Adrian Beltre. The Texas Rangers’ third baseman became the 31st major leaguer to collect 3,000 hits when he doubled in the fourth inning of a 10-6 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. He’s the first Dominican-born player to reach 3,000th and also a five-time Gold Glove winner.
Two final baseball notes – Steve Pearce of the Toronto Blue Jays hit his second walk-off grand slam in four days on Sunday as his club rallied from six runs down to beat the Los Angeles Angels 11-10. In their 40 years of existence, the Jays previously had had only two walk-off grand slams…Today is the deadline for non-waiver trades. Several top pitchers could be changing teams, including Justin Verlander, Yu Darvish and Zach Britton.
NASCAR:Kyle Busch got his first win at Pocono in Long Pond, Pa., and snapped a year-long winless streak as well. For those who prefer the crashes? Well, Matt Kenseth triggered a wreck on the first lap.
ELSEWHERE:Jhonattan Vegas defended his RBC Canadian Open title Sunday at Glen Abbey in Oakville, Ontario, beating Charley Hoffman with a birdie on the first playoff hole…Boxer Mikey Garcia won a unanimous decision from Adrian Broner on Saturday in Brooklyn, N.Y., in a 140-pound bout. Garcia is 37-0…Caeleb Dressel won his seventh gold medal of the world swimming championships Sunday in Budapest in the 4×100-meter medley relay. He had won three golds on Saturday. Katie Ledecky won five gold medals and a silver as well.
