It’s Easy To Gain Access To Webcams And Microphones

It’s easier for hackers now, more than ever, to sneak into your life. Your webcam on your laptop and your microphone on your phone could be gateways for a stranger into your world.

Ondrej Krehel, forensics lead for LIFARS, says you should cover your camera on your laptop because someone could literally watch you in your room. Not only can they gain personal access, but it isn’t that difficult anymore.

“Most of the software…has that capability,” Krehel says.

Former FBI Director James Comey says putting tape over your camera is one of the more sensible things you can do. Even Mark Zuckerberg covers his camera!

But it doesn’t stop at the webcam on your computer, Krehel warns. It is no longer just the stuff of spy movies that someone can use your phone as a listening device. According to Krehel, if someone is fooled into downloading a corrupt app that allows access to your microphone, “it’s completely plausible that someone will listen to [your] conversations.”

The solution to these high-tech problems are rather simple. To avoid such instances, make sure to cover your webcam with tape and be smart about the apps you’re downloading on your phone.
