Blake Lively’s New Summer Movie

Blake Lively’s new summer movie “The Shallows” is a scary one about what happens when you are surfing and you get bitten by a shark. Blake filmed most of this movie alone. However, she discusses her experience with her “companion”, the sea gull who was with her. She tells the story of how when she was wearing the prosthetic shark bite leg, the sea gull started to pack at the “blood”, and how the sea gull tormented her a bit, making her feel like she was in a Hitchcock movie.

Needless to say, there were a lot of comical out takes of the crazy sea gull, whom Blake affectionately named “Steven Seagull”. During the shooting of the movie, they kept up 4 foot waves for most of the time. The movie, which was shot on Lord Howe Island, about a 2 hour flight from Sydney, Australia, is about Blake’s character going surfing. Because Blake doesn’t know how to surf, she had the number one junior surfer in the world as her surf double for the movie. She said she had to work hard to do the paddling and some other maneuvers.

The movie, which is a thriller but also has an emotional core to it, was also a very challenging role for Blake as an actress- one of the hardest rolls she has ever done as an actress. Physically, she feels like it was comparable to training for a marathon. They were shooting for 13 hour days with no lunch breaks in 4 foot waves. Because most of the movie involved Blake on her own, she felt a lot of pressure to do a great job. Although being an isolation film was a challenge for her, Blake felt very inspired to do this movie.
