A Sports Filled Weekend Ahead
Your friendly neighborhood blog rarely recommends that you pay to stay home and stare at the big screen.
For this Weekend TV Six-Pack, we make an exception.
Two power punchers in the middleweight division should put on an exceptional boxing match on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Canelo Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) will meet Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) for the championship; Golovkin is a slight favorite. You’ll pony up $79.99 to HBO but you will get a fight to remember (this is not a money-back guarantee). The undercard begins at 8 p.m. ET. Get some friends together, chip in and all of you can drop your heiners in recliners (a couch also works) in good fellowship.
You will, of course, want to spend some quality time with college football on Saturday. Let us recommend Tennessee-Florida in an SEC clash. The Volunteers can score and the Gators can play defense. CBS, 3:30 p.m.
If you want even more offense, try Oregon-Wyoming at 7 p.m. on CBS Sports. Oregon averages 59.5 points per game and 634 yards of offense. Wyoming doesn’t. The Ducks play fast, the Cowboys play defense (hey, that sounds familiar).
For NFL fun, try the Kansas City Chiefs-Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday on Fox at 1 p.m. (check local listings). Eagles coach Doug Pederson is a protégé of Chiefs coach Andy Reid. Both won their openers, with the Chiefs thrashing the New England Patriots and the Eagles beating the Washington Redskins. In the evening, Atlanta officially opens its new Mercedes-Benz Stadium to the NFL as the Falcons play the Green Bay Packers in a rematch of the last NFC Conference championship game. NBC, 8:30 p.m.
We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the BMW Championship, part of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs. Final round is Sunday, 2 p.m., NBC. And NASCAR’s playoff gets underway at Chicagoland Speedway on Sunday at 3 p.m. on the NBC Sports Network.
You’re going to be busy and you don’t even have to move. Get the kid to mow the lawn. You relax. The blog has spoken.
