Recap The Action-Packed Weekend Of Sports
Baseball’s Hall of Fame welcomed six new members Sunday on a sun-splashed day in Cooperstown, New York. More than 53,000 fans packed the grounds and 57 members of the Hall of Fame turned out to greet the Class of 2018.
Inductees were Chipper Jones, Vladimir Guererro, Jim Thome, Trevor Hoffman, Alan Trammell and Jack Morris. Jones was a member of the Atlanta Braves’ teams that won 14 straight division titles and one World Series; he’s the sixth of that long-running success story to be inducted. Thome’s daughter sang the national anthem.
Jones’ wife was due to give birth within hours of the ceremony. The couple chose the name Cooper for the little boy, in honor of Cooperstown.
In baseball action, the Texas Rangers became the first team to sweep the Houston Astros this season, taking a third straight game on Sunday, this one by 4-3. … Braves pitcher Sean Newcomb pitched 8 2/3 innings of no-hit baseball and was within one strike of a no-hitter when he gave up a single to Chris Taylor. The Braves then went to the bullpen to finish off a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Boxing:
Mikey Garcia pounded out a unanimous decision over Robert Easter Jr. in Los Angeles on Saturday night to unify the WBC and IBF lightweight (135 pound) titles. Garcia knocked Easter down in the third round and improved to 39-0. Garcia has won world titles in four weight classes. … Masayuki Ito won a unanimous 12-round decision over Christopher Diaz in Kissimmee, Florida, to win the vacant WBO junior lightweight title in his first fight outside of Japan.
Elsewhere:
Good Magic, the 1-2 favorite, won the $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J. by three lengths. … Kyle Busch held off Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Daniel Suarez to win NASCAR’s Gander Outdoors 400 in overtime at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania. The second-place finish was the best of Suarez’s career. … Dustin Johnson won the RBC Canada Open by three strokes. … Miguel Angel Jimenez won the Senior British Open on Sunday, nipping defending champion Bernhard Langer by one shot.
