Oprah Addresses Women Of World Summit
Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey delivered the keynote address at the Women of the World Summit in New York City on Wednesday. In her speech, Oprah commended New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern for her display of leadership after the mass shooting at a mosque in the capital city of Christchurch.
“I’ve never seen such leadership,” Oprah said of New Zealand’s Prime Minister. “The prime minister is a woman who has such courage in her convictions and has set a global standard for leadership with her response.”
Ardern donned a hijab and embraced family members of the victims at memorial services. She garnered worldwide praise for her handling of New Zealand’s worst massacre in its history.
Oprah delivered a speech so inspiring that she received a standing ovation from the audience.
“We protest, we persevere, we get knocked down, but—to paraphrase a memorable moment on the floor of the senate—still we persist! We prove ourselves again and again and again. We maintain a healthy skepticism, but we refuse to be cynical,” Winfrey said. “We believe in justice for all—regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, or checking account. And, hard as it is for some folks to fathom, the vast majority of us believe we can determine the right reproductive choices for our own bodies,” Oprah said. “We are there for aging parents, divorcing friends, and scary teenagers. We are good listeners and we are badasses. And above all, we show up. We! Show! Up! Can women save the world? I’d say we’ve been doing exactly that for so many years.”
