‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ Tops Billboard Hot 100

Encanto, the newest animated Disney film, released to generally positive reception back in November. However, it seemed the film needed a little more time to brew in the public consciousness after release, because after a few months, one of the film’s songs has suddenly rocketed to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it the most popular song in America.

The song in question is titled “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” and it outlines the fears that the family of the film’s protagonist, Mirabel, bears regarding her estranged uncle, Bruno. Bruno possessed the power to see into the future and (allegedly) used it to sew misfortune within the family and the community, which is why nobody wants to talk about him following his disappearance.

This is the first time since 1993 that a Disney movie song has topped the Billboard Hot 100, with the previous title holder being “A Whole New World” from Aladdin. Even “Let It Go” from Frozen only ever got as high as fifth place on the chart, so this is a substantial achievement for the film’s cast and crew, particularly its writer, Lin-Manuel Miranda.
