The returns have been subpoenaed in an ongoing investigation into the former President’s finances and dealings.
Since his time in office, former United States President Donald Trump has made a concentrated effort to keep his tax returns hidden from public view. This was a break from a longstanding tradition of US Presidents releasing their taxes as a sign of good faith. The returns were subpoenaed for an investigation into Trump’s finances as far back as 2019, but the matter stayed tied up in lower courts for the last several years.

Recently, however, the matter was escalated up to the Supreme Court, where the Justices ruled that there is no reason for the Internal Revenue Service to keep the tax returns under wraps any longer. These documents have already been requested by House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal, who expects to have them within the next week.
Donald Trump reported losses on his tax returns annually for a decade, including nearly $700 million in 2009, his longtime accountant testified, confirming long-held suspicions about the former president's tax practices. https://t.co/EaGM6619bH

“We knew the strength of our case, we stayed the course, followed the advice of counsel, and finally, our case has been affirmed by the highest court in the land,” Neal said in a statement following the ruling. “Since the Magna Carta, the principle of oversight has been upheld, and today is no different. This rises above politics, and the committee will now conduct the oversight that we’ve sought for the last three and a half years.”
