PGA Championship
Winning one of golf’s major championships is always memorable. Winning one the way Jason Day did is completely unforgettable.
The 27-year-old Australian captured the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, with a major-record score of 20 under. His round of 67 on Sunday gave him a 3-stroke victory over Jordan Spieth, who had won the first two majors of the year.
Spieth didn’t walk away with no prizes. By virtue of his performance, he unseated Rory McIlroy as the world’s No. 1 golfer.
That Tiger Woods fellow? He missed the cut for the fourth time in his last five majors.
BASEBALL
Don’t you love it when good pitchers can also hit? Zack Greinke ran his record to 13-2 as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Cincinnati Reds 2-1 on Sunday. The Dodgers’ runs came on back-to-back homers in the fifth inning by Joc Pederson and Greinke, on consecutive pitches. Greinke is 8-0 in his last 11 starts and dropped his major league-leading ERA to 1.58. … Not to be outdone, Madison Bumgarner of the San Francisco Giants shut out the Washington Nationals 5-0. He threw his second consecutive complete game, struck out 14, doubled home a run in the fifth inning and hit a solo homer in the seventh. Bumgarner is 14-6 with a 2.98 ERA.
NASCAR
Matt Kenseth led for 146 of the 200 laps at the Pure Michigan 400 on Sunday at Michigan International Speedway and won for the second time in his last three races and the third time this season. Kevin Harvick finished second and Martin Truex Jr. was third.
NFL
After two years out of the game, Tim Tebow made his return in the Philadelphia Eagles’ 36-10 preseason victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Tebow, battling for the team’s No. 3 quarterback job, scored on a 7-yard run in the fourth quarter. “It was fun,” Tebow said. “Seeing the end zone and fighting to get in – I’ve been blessed to have a few opportunities in my life.”
